Centrepoint Charity Tutoring Initiative - Nov '17

Centrepoint, the UK’s leading charity for homeless young people, is establishing a new initiative with Equilibrium Tutors (EQTutors) and The Tutors' Association to match homeless 16-25 year olds in need of extra academic support with experienced tutors looking to donate their time and give something back.

For homeless young people, a job is almost as important as a home. Disruption to education or training is one of the major barriers to progressing into a stable career. On average, 40% of Centrepoint’s residents have no formal qualifications when they arrive. While they are committed to re-engaging in education, many have large knowledge and skills gaps which require additional support and would hugely benefit from working with a tutor to get up to speed.

The Organisers
Centrepoint has a long established track record of successfully providing homeless young people with opportunities to learn, gain skills and prepare for the world of work by assessing their resident's individual needs and supporting them with starting college courses and finding jobs. HRH The Duke of Cambridge is patron of the charity, having followed in the footsteps of his mother Princess Diana. EQTutors has a successful 10 year track record of providing educational support packages which take into account the emotional and cognitive challenges facing many students alongside academic considerations. In a largely unregulated industry, The Tutors’ Association is the leading professional body representing and supporting both individual tutors and tutoring agencies.

The Commitment
Tutoring sessions will require subject specific support, with a substantial need for ESOL and core skills. Whether you can give one session a month or two sessions a week - everything helps. Sessions will take place in London at Centrepoint hostels, fully staffed by the superb Centrepoint Supported Housing Teams. Everyone involved in this program is volunteering their time on a pro bono basis.
