One of the most important aspects of being a professional tutor is ensuring student safety. A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is a key safeguarding measure that reassures parents, schools, and tuition agencies that a tutor is suitable to work with children. While not all tutors are legally required to have a DBS check, having one can make a significant difference in your credibility and employability.
What is a DBS Check?
A DBS check is a background check conducted by the Disclosure and Barring Service in the UK. It discloses any criminal records or warnings, ensuring that individuals working with children or vulnerable adults are fit for the role. There are different levels of DBS checks, with the Enhanced DBS check being the most relevant for tutors.
Why Tutors Should Get a DBS Check
Even if you work independently and are not legally required to obtain a DBS check, having one offers clear benefits:
- Increased trust from parents and schools – Many parents and institutions will only hire tutors who can provide evidence of a clean DBS check.
- Essential for working with schools and agencies – If you tutor in a school setting or through an agency, an Enhanced DBS check is often required.
- Professional credibility – Being DBS-checked demonstrates your commitment to safeguarding, making you a more attractive choice for clients.

Types of DBS Checks for Tutors
There are three main types of DBS checks, each with different levels of disclosure:
- Basic DBS Check – Shows unspent convictions and is available to anyone.
- Standard DBS Check – Includes spent and unspent convictions, cautions, and warnings.
- Enhanced DBS Check – The most comprehensive check, including any additional information held by local police.
Tutors working with children are typically advised to obtain an Enhanced DBS Check, as it provides the highest level of safeguarding reassurance. The Tutors’ Association requires all of its members to have a valid Enhanced DBS check.
Benefits of TTA Membership Regarding DBS Checks
The Tutors’ Association offers distinct advantages for its members concerning DBS checks:
- Free Processing for Members – Individual members can apply for an Enhanced DBS check without incurring the TTA’s administrative fee. However, the standard DBS check fee of £57.00 plus around £10.90 for Digital ID still applies.
- Corporate Members – Can set up a dashboard with our DBS Body Provider and process DBS checks directly.
- Non-Members – Non-members can still apply through TTA, but an additional £15.00 processing fee applies on top of the standard £57.00 DBS check fee plus around £10.90 for Digital ID.

How Tutors Can Apply for a DBS Check
Unlike teachers employed in schools, self-employed tutors cannot apply directly for an Enhanced DBS check. However, there are ways to obtain one:
- Apply through a professional association like TTA – Members can access this service easily. Apply here.
- Join a tutoring agency – Many agencies assist their tutors with DBS applications as part of their onboarding process.
- Use an umbrella body – Some registered organisations can process DBS applications for self-employed individuals.
Keeping Your DBS Check Up to Date
A DBS check doesn’t have an official expiry date, but many parents and agencies expect a recent one, ideally within the last three years. Tutors should subscribe to the DBS Update Service, which allows them to keep their certificate current and easily shareable with employers.
