2022 Highlights:

The 6th National Tutors’ Conference took place this year in London, at the Royal Society. It was a fantastic event which saw a wide range of speakers address both individual tutors and corporates in a series of highly engaging sessions.

‘Driving Excellence’ lies at the heart of what TTA was created to do, and you, our members, already represent some of the very best of what the tuition profession has to offer. It is important for us to consider how we offer and maintain an excellent standard of tuition as well as encouraging parents and schools to recognise and value such quality. The Conference will look at how we as an Association, and you as its members, work to ensure that students make exceptional progress through collaboration, enhancing skills continuous improvement in every aspect of what we do.

Catriona Robinson - University of Worcester

Catriona is the Head of School of Education at the University of Worcester; she has a longstanding passion for teacher education. She is a trustee for a multi-academy trust, chaired the Universities Council for the Education of Teachers Assessment Only Committee and has been instrumental in developing academic programmes in Tutoring and Mentoring.

Joe Francis, Brillder

 Joe Francis is the founder and CEO of Brillder, an edtech publisher which 

aspires to offer the sophistication and nuance needed for 16-19 year-olds. A former teacher, tutor and school head himself, he reflects on the limitations and strengths of technology and highlights the inimitable advantages of the human tutor.

Simon McQueen - Bright Heart Education

Simon is a CFA charterholder and chartered accountant with a background in private equity. He recently obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Strategy & Innovation from the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School. Simon is one of Bright Heart’s co-founders responsible for finance, strategy, operations, and legal/compliance.

Johnny Manning - Manning's Tutors

Johnny Manning is the founder and CEO of Manning’s Tutors Ltd with over 14 years of experience delivering in-school tuition schemes for disadvantaged pupils.

Julia Silver - Qualified Tutor

My ‘why’ is to contribute to the change that needs to happen in education to make it more nuanced, sustainable and fit for purpose. As a school leader, my passion is for shifting culture by developing the people around me. I created Qualified Tutor, a much-loved community and training provider, to provide confidence and connection for tutors.

Mary Lonsdale - Mentor Education

Mary is the CEO of Mentor Education, Vice President of the Tutors’ Association and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. She has owned and run Mentor Education for seven years. Mary is shortlisted this year for Business Woman of the Year by Education Investor.

Imran Ahmed - Pencil Spaces

Imran is Head of Product at Pencil Spaces, a virtual classroom for educators. Previously a consultant at McKinsey, Imran attended Cambridge and MIT, where he helped develop technology to make it 100x cheaper for students in West Africa to access educational content. Now, Imran spends his time talking to tutors, and helping them grow their tutoring businesses.

Benjamin Yee - Pencil Spaces

Ben is Head of Tutor Success at Pencil Spaces, a virtual classroom for educators. A former digital communications specialist for political and public outreach campaigns in the US — including President Barack Obama’s presidential runs and the New York State government — Ben now applies his skills to bringing new tools to educators and helping them engage students online. 

Leo Evans - The Profs

Dr Leo Evans co-founded the award-winning online tutoring companies Spires, Bitpaper and The Profs. He holds a PhD in Financial Economics from Imperial College Business School, where he formerly lectured on their master’s programmes. He also worked as a vice president and portfolio strategist at JP Morgan in London.

Lucy Spencer - Education Boutique

Lucy Alexandra Spencer is a qualified teacher and private tutor specialising in ASD and entrance exams. She founded Education Boutique in 2016 and, in 2021, was acquired by the Eteach Group. “Tutoring has totally changed my life!” she says.

Nathaniel McCullagh - Simply Learning

After working as a private tutor in London, Nathaniel founded Simply Learning Tuition in 2009. He was inspired to help children who didn’t find learning easy and took a particular interest in mentoring and tutoring for Common Entrance. Nathaniel attended both Durham University and the University of Southern California.

Deborah Salsbury - The Reading Doctor

Deborah qualified as a primary school teacher in 1993 before founding the Reading Doctor in 2012 to focus entirely on the teaching of reading. The Reading Doctor has won awards, including the Kent Women in Education Awards 2022 and 2021 NatWest EWIF Awards, and runner-up in the National Tutoring Awards 2022.

Cath Tolfrey - The Reading Doctor

Cath is a Special Needs Tutor and became the first franchisee for The Reading Doctor in 2018. She has opened four School Hubs in local mainstream primary schools and secondary specialist provision. Cath was a runner-up of The National Tutoring Awards 2022.

Anne Morris - Yipiyap

Anne is a former secondary school Maths teacher who founded Yipiyap in 2012 to deliver in-school tuition to schools and colleges. After a decade of leading the sector’s development, Yipiyap has a national presence delivering support in the core subjects in person and online.

Arthur Moore - Professional Tutor

Arthur is a former Secondary Maths Teacher who now works as an online Maths Tutor. He also creates content for various websites and has started ‘Helping My Child Learn ‘, which helps parents support their child’s learning. He also co-hosts the educational podcast TandTeaching.

Sarah Brouner - SB Tutoring

Lucy Davies - Professional Tutor

Lucy is a former Head of English with thirty years of experience teaching in both state and private schools. She is a self-employed tutor across the age range who also examines for A level and the International Baccalaureate.

Dr David McPhail - Self-Employed Tutor

David is a highly experienced tutor of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and GAMSAT from years 10-13. He has considerable experience in helping students with learning difficulties and special educational needs, including students receiving their secondary education at home. Previously, David was a lecturer at Imperial College.

Helen Osmond - Professional Tutor

Helen Osmond is the founder of Osmond Education. She has been tutoring maths to GCSE and A-Level students since 2010 and was shortlisted for the National Tutoring Awards, Best Online Tutor in 2022. She specialises in helping nervous students overcome their anxiety and build their confidence.
