Insights from the Tuition Leadership Day

Reflecting on the Success of the TTA Tuition Leadership Day 2024

On October 25, 2024, The Tutors’ Association (TTA) hosted its highly anticipated Tuition Leadership Day—a dynamic event that brought together key figures from the tuition sector for a day of collaboration, strategic planning, and forward-thinking. The event featured interactive discussions with TTA’s leadership team, including John Nichols (TTA President), Julius Goldthorpe (General Manager), Richard Cowell (Vice President), and Chris Wordsworth (Treasurer), along with an engaged delegation of members and sector stakeholders.

The day was divided into four critical discussion sections, each aimed at addressing pressing issues and shaping the future of the tuition sector. Here’s a look at the highlights and outcomes:

Section 1: Strategic Focus Areas for the Tuition Sector

Outcome: Delegates and leadership reached a consensus that TTA’s current strategic priorities remain highly relevant. These include:

  • Enforcing minimum standards across the sector.
  • Promoting best practices.
  • Representing the tuition sector effectively to both the public and government.

These focus areas reflect TTA’s ongoing mission to provide high-quality, safe tuition opportunities for all students and ensure professionalism within the sector.

Section 2: The Best Regulatory Framework for the Tuition Sector

Outcome: Attendees engaged in a thought-provoking debate on regulation, concluding that:

  • TTA’s regulatory role should be focused on ensuring individual compliance with its Code of Practice, taking public positions only when a breach is substantiated by the Disciplinary Committee.
  • TTA must advocate for enhanced DBS checks to become a statutory requirement for all tutors, emphasising safeguarding and trust in tuition services.

This discussion reaffirmed TTA’s balanced approach, ensuring accountability without overstepping its role.

Section 3: Unlocking Global Growth Opportunities for Tuition Providers

Outcome: With the growing international demand for British education, delegates expressed strong support for TTA’s efforts to:

  • Lead more trade missions, such as those planned for China and the Middle East in 2025.
  • Facilitate connections between members and international agents and clients.

Such initiatives align with TTA’s vision of supporting its members in accessing global markets, highlighting the value of TTA’s representation in international forums.

Section 4: The Future of the Tuition Sector

Outcome: Delegates envisioned a sector that is increasingly recognised as essential to education. Key objectives for the next five years include:

  • Continuing to advocate for legislation mandating enhanced DBS checks.
  • Partnering with exam boards to unlock exam materials traditionally reserved for schools.
  • Elevating the professional tuition sector to be seen as on the same professional level as schools and teachers.

This section highlighted the collective ambition to enhance the sector’s legitimacy and opportunities while maintaining its dedication to excellence.

A Vision Aligned with TTA’s Mission

The discussions at the Tuition Leadership Day exemplified TTA’s commitment to representing the tuition sector with integrity and foresight. Each section reflected the Association’s strategic objectives to set high standards, foster growth, and ensure the sector is both respected and accessible.

As TTA continues to champion the needs of tutors, businesses, and students alike, events like these are instrumental in steering the sector towards a brighter, more equitable future.

We thank everyone who participated for their invaluable contributions and look forward to continuing these important conversations in the months ahead.
