Why Enhanced DBS Checks and Prohibition Order Checks Are Essential for Safeguarding

When choosing a tutor or educator to work with children, ensuring they have undergone the proper safeguarding checks is not just a precaution—it’s a necessity. An Enhanced DBS check and a prohibition order check should be the absolute minimum standard when verifying someone’s suitability to work with children. Without them, there is a significant risk of individuals who should not be working with children slipping through the cracks.

A recent BBC investigation highlighted this concern, revealing cases where individuals with safeguarding concerns were still able to engage in education-related work (BBC News). These incidents serve as a stark reminder of why rigorous background checks are so important.

What is an Enhanced DBS Check?

An Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check provides detailed background information on an individual, including criminal convictions, cautions, and whether they are barred from working with children or vulnerable people. Unlike a basic or standard DBS check, the enhanced version includes information held by police that may be relevant to safeguarding decisions.

For anyone working closely with children, this level of vetting is essential. Without it, there’s no way to be certain that the person you’re hiring doesn’t have a history of concerning behaviour.

Why Checking for Prohibition Orders is Crucial

A prohibition order check ensures that a tutor or educator is not banned from teaching due to misconduct. Teachers who have been found guilty of serious professional misconduct may be banned from working in education altogether. However, because private tutors do not fall under the same regulatory framework as school teachers, it is crucial that parents and organisations take extra steps to confirm that a tutor has not been prohibited from working with children.

Safeguarding Must Be a Priority

The safeguarding failures outlined in recent reports highlight how individuals who should not be working with children sometimes still find ways to do so. Whether due to gaps in regulation or lack of awareness, it is essential that parents and organisations actively check a tutor’s credentials before allowing them to work with young people.

At The Tutors’ Association, safeguarding is non-negotiable. All TTA members who provide tuition to children must hold an Enhanced DBS check and adhere to our strict Code of Conduct. We also advise parents to check for prohibition orders and always verify a tutor’s status before engaging their services.
