Whether you tutor full time or fit tutoring around other work, it is important to make sure you are paying the right tax at the right time.
That is why The Tutors’ Association (TTA) continues to work closely with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) to provide clear, reliable signposting to official tax guidance designed specifically with tutors in mind. This partnership helps our members understand what they need to do, without needing to be tax experts themselves.
Tutoring income and Self Assessment
If you receive income from tutoring, either as your main source of earnings or alongside employment, you may need to declare this through a Self Assessment tax return. This applies whether you tutor online, in person, part time, or full time.
Key points in the tax year to be aware of include:
• From 6 April: The earliest point you can submit a tax return for the previous tax year.
• By 5 October: The deadline to register for Self Assessment if you are newly self employed.
• By 31 January: The deadline to file your return and pay any tax owed.
Missing these deadlines can result in penalties, so early awareness really helps.
A dedicated tax hub for tutors
With support from HMRC, TTA has developed a bespoke tax page for tutors, bringing together relevant guidance in one place. This includes information to help you:
• Check whether you need to tell HMRC about your tutoring income.
• Understand Self Assessment if you have never completed one before.
• Access updated guidance, including VAT information relevant to tutors.

Keep it simple, keep it official
As part of this collaboration, HMRC provides links to official GOV.UK guidance and short educational videos, so tutors can go straight to accurate, up to date information. TTA does not provide individual tax advice but helps members access the right sources at the right time.
If you are unsure what applies to you, taking a few minutes to check the guidance can save time and stress later.
Stay informed
Tax doesn’t need to be complicated. By using TTA’s dedicated resources and HMRC’s official guidance, tutors can feel more confident about meeting their responsibilities, leaving more time to focus on teaching.
